How confident do you feel about your ability to identify claims in a text? What was the easiest part of today's activity, and what did you find challenging? Explain how today's lesson helped you better understand the difference between a claim and other statements an author might make. -10/21/2026

Prompt Response: I feel highly confident in the ability to identify claims because I can easily spot the central arguments an author is trying to prove. The easiest part of today's activity was recognizing clear claims of policy, since they state what actions should or should not be taken. However, I found it challenging to identify between subtle claims of value and claims of fact at times. Today’s lesson helped me realize that a true claim must be arguable and supported by evidence, whereas other statements are often just objective facts or personal preferences. Understanding this difference makes it much easier to track an author's actual reasoning without getting distracted by background information. Now, I can read any text with knowing exactly how to separate the argument from the supporting context.

Summary: Today in class we practiced identifying claims within a text.

Reflection: After reading a text and finding the different claims it helped me in a bigger way to firstly identify a claim. It also made me practice a bit more to identify the different types of claims in texts.
